What kind of fireplace project are you actually planning?
Identify whether you are replacing a gas appliance, adding an insert to an eligible existing fireplace or creating a new installation. Each path depends on different site evidence. A preferred appearance or opening size is a starting point, not confirmation that a model and its venting can be installed.
Existing gas appliance
Keep model information and identify the installed vent and surrounding assembly. Similar dimensions do not establish replacement compatibility.
Existing wood-burning fireplace
The enclosure’s type and condition determine whether a certified insert arrangement is possible. Do not remove structural components in advance.
New fireplace location
Coordinate appliance selection with the vent route, gas supply, power where needed, framing and future service access.
The gas fireplace installation and replacement pillar introduces these project paths. We do not assume a particular product is stocked or suitable for every property.
Which authority applies to a City or District installation?
Confirm the property address and the work being proposed before choosing the permit route. City and District of North Vancouver are separate authorities for qualifying gas and electrical work. Technical Safety BC retains responsibilities outside delegated scope. Building approvals and strata consent are questions, even when a gas permit applies.
Technical Safety BC’s jurisdiction page lists both municipalities. For natural gas, delegated scope includes fully detached dwellings on a single meter at 2 psi or less; for other premises, the connected-load limit also matters. The contractor must verify the actual conditions rather than apply one rule to every North Vancouver address.
The City’s gas-permit information and District’s gas-permit route are separate resources. A municipal boundary does not create a second EFS booking service. Confirm any construction, exterior work or strata permission relevant to the project.
How do insert and enclosure requirements affect a conversion?
A gas insert must be matched to an eligible enclosure and its certification. Technical Safety BC permits certified inserts in masonry or solid-fuel zero-clearance fireplaces, with other enclosures requiring a certified insert-and-enclosure package. Structural alteration has limits. Assessment comes before demolition, purchase or an assumption that every opening is reusable.
The current gas-insert safety order limits removal to specified replaceable parts attached with mechanical fasteners and prohibits alteration or removal of the existing structure. Where modification is needed, its certified-kit provisions must be addressed. Leave this work to the qualified installer.
For a concrete selection example, the current Valor P2 resources distinguish engine, front, backing-plate and vent accessories. A front’s finished dimensions are not the same evidence as enclosure eligibility or an approved vent configuration. This is a documentation example, not an EFS product-availability claim.
What should the installation scope account for?
Consider the finished project as well as the fireplace itself. EFS’s installation services can include removal, gas connection or alteration, venting, fireplace-related electrical work, framing, finishing, permits when required and commissioning. Assessment determines required work. Confirm responsibilities and exclusions so a quoted appliance is not mistaken for a complete renovation.
- Selected appliance and the components approved for its actual configuration.
- Removal and disposal of the old unit where included.
- Gas-line work, venting and relevant electrical connections.
- Framing, finishing and access needed for the work and future service.
- Applicable permits, approvals and inspection arrangements.
- Startup, commissioning and homeowner operating information.
Ask which items are included, which depend on further site information and who coordinates related work. Cost changes with equipment choice, installation requirements, access and the agreed finish. We do not publish an invented package price, rebate entitlement or fixed completion time.
Where in North Vancouver can EFS assess an installation?
EFS covers installation requests in both North Vancouver municipalities under one service area. The address determines the site and approval context; the neighbourhood does not establish construction feasibility. Use the separate City and District lists to identify your location, then describe the existing fireplace or the proposed room changes.
City of North Vancouver neighbourhoods

The City and District are separate municipalities. These lists identify service coverage, not completed projects, an office location or a promise about arrival time. Send your street address so the appointment and any approval questions can be matched to the property.
Send an existing room photograph, project drawing if available and safely accessible appliance information. For a strata property, identify the contact who can clarify common-property permissions and access. Avoid destructive investigation simply to prepare an enquiry.
What needs to be settled before normal use begins?
Installation is not complete simply because a flame appears. Startup and commissioning must address the installed appliance and its functions, and applicable approval or inspection requirements must be resolved. Ask how to operate the controls, what maintenance is required and whether any remaining condition prevents normal use of the fireplace.
Keep the exact appliance manual and the records supplied for the work. Do not use a partly installed fireplace or bypass a control while waiting for completion. EFS provides a one-year workmanship warranty on completed installation work, while the equipment and parts follow the manufacturer’s terms.
If the current unit may remain serviceable, start with North Vancouver gas fireplace diagnosis. For care after installation, see North Vancouver fireplace service. The repair overview and maintenance overview explain these separate services; brand information and component information help with appliance identification.
North Vancouver installation questions
Resolve the practical questions that change the project before treating it as an appliance purchase. Confirm the property’s municipality, certified configuration, required work and completion responsibilities. The answers below explain common planning limits without promising universal fit, reusing unverified components or replacing a repairable fireplace solely because it is older.
Does choosing EFS mean I need separate City and District bookings?
No. We cover both through the same North Vancouver service. Your property still belongs to its actual municipality, which matters for approvals and permit administration.
Can an old vent remain with a replacement?
Only when the replacement appliance’s listing and instructions approve the actual vent configuration and its condition is suitable. A matching diameter or similar-looking pipe is insufficient evidence.
Can finishing happen before the appliance has been selected?
Coordinate the actual model and installation requirements first. Finished-wall dimensions, clearances and access must suit that model; an attractive design alone does not establish compliance.
Does age alone mean replacement is necessary?
No. Condition, supported repair options, compatible parts and your project goal should inform the decision. A fault may justify diagnosis before you commit to reconstruction.
